The Overwatch community has always been creative, but one fan pairing has risen above all others in recent months. Mizuyang – the fictional relationship between support heroes Mizuki Kawano and Wuyang Ye – has become the most popular ship for both characters on Archive of Our Own, the largest fanfiction archive. For many players, it’s more than just a cute idea; it’s a way to connect with the game’s lore and each other.
We spoke with Torrynz, a Grand Master support player and dedicated Wuyang main, about why Mizuyang resonates so strongly. He points to the contrast between Wuyang’s bubbly personality and Mizuki’s mysterious demeanor, plus their green and blue color palettes that remind him of the men-loving-men pride flag. “Their color palettes match the men-loving-men pride flag,” Torrynz said. “So I thought that was kind of cute. You have the greens for Mizuki and then you have the blues for Wuyang.”

How a voice actor deepened the ship’s appeal
Torrynz’s appreciation for Mizuyang grew after meeting Fareeha Andersen, the voice actor for Anran, another Overwatch hero. Andersen is passionate about the ship and active in the community. “She is so passionate about Overwatch lore and she loves the ship as well,” Torrynz said. “Because of her, I actually got to understand that I’m not alone in this.” That validation helped Torrynz feel comfortable expressing his love for the pairing without worrying it was “unnecessary or incorrect.”
Mizuyang’s presence across platforms
Beyond fanfiction, Mizuyang thrives on social media. Torrynz regularly sees fanart shared by friends and artists, calling it “gorgeous and beautiful.” The ship’s popularity shows no sign of slowing down, with new content appearing daily on Twitter, Tumblr, and Reddit.
- Mizuyang is the most popular pairing for both Mizuki and Wuyang on Archive of Our Own.
- Fareeha Andersen, Anran’s voice actor, actively supports the ship and engages with fans.
- Green and blue color schemes match the MLM pride flag, adding symbolic meaning for many fans.

Wuyang gameplay tips from a Grand Master main
Torrynz didn’t just talk about the ship – he also shared advice for players looking to improve with Wuyang. He emphasized staying active in fights by dealing damage rather than healbotting. Even small splash damage or aiming orb shots at enemies’ feet can swing a fight. He also reminded players that Guardian Wave can both knock back enemies and boost healing on allies. “I do know a lot of people have trouble with his primary fire,” Torrynz said. “You can tune the sensitivity when you’re turning to control the orb.” He also stressed learning map layouts to land tight corner shots and guarantee kills.
Despite his love for the hero, Torrynz thinks Blizzard has over-nerfed Wuyang. He believes the passive healing is too low and should be slightly increased, and that Wuyang’s ultimate should be easier to apply to himself in clutch moments. These balance concerns reflect the current Overwatch meta, where support survivability is a hot topic.
| Aspect | Torrynz’s Tip |
|---|---|
| Primary fire | Adjust hero-specific sensitivity for orb control |
| Damage priority | Deal splash damage and aim at feet |
| Guardian Wave | Use to knock back enemies and boost healing |
| Map knowledge | Learn layouts for tight corner shots |
| Passive healing | Should be increased slightly |
| Ultimate | Should apply faster to self in clutch moments |
Torrynz first fell in love with Wuyang after seeing concept art in February 2025. He played 25 hours in the August playtest and hasn’t looked back. For him, Wuyang represents both a character he can see himself in and a hero he can climb with. Mizuyang is just the cherry on top – a ship that brings the community together.
